It was such a fun session and I've been meaning to share the pictures with everyone since I finished editing them! However, life gets in the way sometimes. Long story short, a lot has unfolded in the last couple weeks that ate up all my time (thanks air conditioner for failing us in a heat wave). But here I am, finally getting a chance to share this fun shoot!

I've lived in New Jersey for 5 years, but somehow never have made it to Hoboken. And if you're reading this and have never been, add it to your list! It's such a neat city with so much to see and do. Jeff and Katie were very familiar with the area, and we did a mini-tour through pictures. It was so refreshing to capture their fun spirits along with the amazing backdrop of Hoboken and NYC. Check out some of my favorites:

Katie & Jeff - thanks again for allowing me to be apart of this special time in your lives! Looking forward to your big day in October!

ryan & kristina - sayen gardens engagement session I don't know about you, but to me it felt like a very long winter. It felt like Spring would never arrive... But finally we're in May and it feels like Spring in the air (or maybe summer, but I won't complain). And what better way to kick off this warmer weather than an engagement session surrounded by beautiful flowers and trees at Sayen Gardens.

I feel repetitive when I say this, but I love meeting and working with my clients. It's one of my favorite parts about being a photographer! And working with Ryan and Kristina was no exception! The happy (and adorable) couple brought a great energy with them and they were ready to laugh and smile throughout their session. As I've said many times before, I love bringing out the natural expressions in each couple, and laughs are a great way to do that!

But beyond the fun and games, one of the qualities that struck me the most about Ryan & Kristina was their true love and trust in one another. The way he wrapped his arms around her, the way she looked up at him, and the way that they caught each other's eye told me their story with no words at all.

Ryan & Kristina - it was a pleasure working with you for your engagement session and I cannot wait to share in the happiness on your big day later this year!

Sarah & Aaron - Old City Engagement Session Hi friends!

After a long (and very relaxing) winter, I am back in the swing of photoshoots! While the winter was so nice to catch up on the not-so-glamorous side of the business, I definitely missed the nice weather and working with the best clients :) Saturday was my first engagement session of the year, and while the nice weather part is still missing, I loved working with this cute and happy couple!

Meet Sarah and Aaron. A couple that met back in their home state of Texas where they went to the same school. Many years later, they are engaged and getting married in November! While Philadelphia is only their temporary home (as they're headed back to Texas this summer), I was so excited to tour Old City with them for their engagement session.

I always say it; I work with the best couples. And this one was no exception! Upon first meeting the two, I could instantly feel the love and connection between them. They were so fun and open to all of my picture ideas! Sarah & Aaron - I wish you two all the best in the months to come and your life together! Enjoy your last few months in Philadelphia and your life ahead in Texas!

holly & tim - engagement session Engagement sessions are one of my favorites when it comes to photography. I love meeting the couples and learning about their story and future together. My session with Holly and Tim was no exception! They were such a fun couple and they were troopers on the chilly November evening! And learning about their story made it all the more fun :) Check out some of my favorites from their session below!

lianne & scyler - engagement pictures 10.22.17 Every engagement session, I enjoy working and getting to know each and every couple. Everyone has a different story and unique bond and I love sharing in that, if even just for the couple hours I get to work with them! But when I met Lianne & Scyler for their engagement pictures, I quickly realized this couple had something really special. Their love for each other is so strong, and they've been through so much together (which has only made them stronger!). I really appreciated hearing their stories and getting to know the wonderful couple that they are.

We met at Holmdel Park in Monmouth County early Sunday morning. And by early I mean sunrise early. I've said it before, and I will say it again, I LOVE sunrise photoshoots. There is something so calming about taking pictures when most people aren't even awake. And not only that, but there is no prettier time of day! Lucky for us, Sunday was no ordinary sunrise. First off, it was freezing (not literally, but after we've been spoiled with warm fall weather, it felt like it!). But there was also a fine layer of mist skirting the entire park. With the fall colors on top of that, it was literally breathtaking.

Lianne & Scyler - I wish you all the best with wedding planning and your future together!! It was so nice meeting you (and your adorable pups!) and thank you so much for sharing your story with me!

maggie & shawon's wedding - 10.20.17 October 20th, 2017 was a day I've been looking forward to for a while now. Not only was it my first fall wedding to photograph, but it was the day two great friends of ours were saying "I do"! And while I had so many expectations for how the day would go, they were all exceeded when it finally came!

One of my favorite things about the newlyweds is their ability to make any situation fun and anybody laugh, and their wedding day was full of both! From the beginning pictures with the groomsman to the final bride and groom portraits, the whole day was one of my most fun days of photography yet! They celebrated their love at Awbury Arboretum in Philadelphia, which turned out to be the perfect fall day - lots of sun, changing leaves, and a perfect temperature. Not only was the day fun and lighthearted, but their love for each other was so tangible (I may or may not have cried during the ceremony...).

Maggie and Shawon - congratulations on your big day!! Thank you for letting me capture your portraits! Can't wait to watch you make memories together throughout the years of marriage ahead!

Check out some of my favorite pictures from their day below!

stephanie & austin wedding - 9.3.17 I've been looking forward to Stephanie & Austin's wedding since the day I met them for their engagement shoot, and it really was more than I could ever have imagined! I've said it many times, but there's nothing that makes me happier in photography than when you can feel a couple's love through the camera. It really is why I love doing weddings and engagement shoots so much! This is something that comes so naturally to Steph and Austin. Their chemistry is unbelievable, and the way they light up when the other is nearby is a beautiful thing!

Steph & Austin- thank you so much for letting me be apart of your big day! It was so nice to get to know you throughout the past couple months, and I wish you all the best as you continue to build your marriage and life together!

white family pictures Summer is unfortunately winding down [insert crying face] but before it ends, I was lucky enough to go to the beach once more - for family portraits with my favorites, Janet, Jason & Damon. This one is special for me because I've gotten to know this cute family from maternity pictures to newborn pictures, to now, family pictures. Janet & Jason are one of the cutest couple, and Damon is probably the happiest child I've ever met! He literally exudes joy! Check out some of my favorites from their shoot in beautiful Mantoloking, NJ!

mikaela & sean engagement One of the reasons I love doing photography so much is because I truly have fun doing it. They say when you are doing what you love, it never feels like work. While this has definitely been the case with all of the shoots I've done, it was truly exemplified at my engagement session on Sunday.

Mikaela and Sean were engaged in March and really wanted to do an engagement session at the beach, since it's where they've spent many memories together. We met at Sandy Hook Beach for sunset, and the day could not have been more beautiful. What made this shoot so fun was their natural chemistry, ease with being in front of the camera, and willingness to try some unique shots. Check out some of my favorites below!

Thanks again Mikaela & Sean for allowing me to be apart of this special time and I can't wait to work with you again for your wedding!

Liliana One thing I've learned at newborn shoots in the past (and all the mama's who I've worked with know this to be true), babies just don't like to sleep around me. I'm not sure if it's the camera that keeps them intrigued, or if I just have that fun of a presence, but babies just don't want to miss any of the moments! With that said, Liliana followed suit and wanted to stay awake the entire time :) Luckily, she has the most beautiful eyes, which made the pictures that much nicer! Take a look below for some of my favorites from the session:

laura & rady wedding It's hard to imagine a more perfect setting for Laura & Rady to say "I do" than the beautiful Braehead Manor in Fredericksburg, VA. Friends and family came out to give their support and celebrate the happiest day of Laura & Rady's lives. Though the weather was unusually warm for the end of June, everyone was beaming watching these two say "I do"! While all aspects of the day were beautiful, the moments that struck me most were when the happy couple thought no one was watching. The love these two share for each other is inspiring, and they're smiles say it all! Laura & Rady - thanks for letting me be apart of your day and many wishes for the years ahead!!

There is no better family to work with for the first time than the Campasano's! We chose one of my favorite locations to shoot - Deep Cut Gardens. It was a beautiful day, so we really lucked out! Thank you to the Campasano family for the opportunity to photograph your family!! As you all will see, they are quite possibly the most adorable family ever :)

trey & blair - engagement shoot How many people do you know who would wake up at 4:30 to start their photoshoot just in time for sunrise? Lucky for me, Trey and Blair were up for the challenge! As an early bird, this is my favorite time of day to do a shoot- for reasons you'll see why :) But first - their story!

Trey and Blair recently got engaged in Beach Haven, NJ. They've been together for nearly 9 years, so we all knew it was a matter of time before they took their relationship a step further. In early March, he brought Blair to the family shore house surrounded by some of their closest friends. Before the night was through, he had gotten down on one knee and the rest is history! Fast forward over 2 months and they were ready for their engagement shoot, right where he had asked the question months prior. When Blair had asked me if I would do their shoot - I was thrilled! These two are some of my favorite people - but I'm a little biased since we're family:). We decided to do a two part shoot, with the first part on the beach at sunrise and the second part touring around some fun spots on LBI. Take a look below for some of my favorite shots!

Part 2

Wishing these two the best of luck through their engagement and all the things to come in the future!! So much love for these two :)

what i've learned so far Hi everyone!! I want to start off with a huge apology for the break in posts! It’s been a crazy couple of weeks with traveling and other great things, but nonetheless, I’m glad to be back! It’s officially been over 4 months since I started this venture, and what a few months it’s been! There’ve been so many great things to happen, and I’ve also done a ton of learning. I’m so blessed to have had the best clients, and I look forward to growing that list in the future :) I can literally not say it enough - thank you SO much to everyone who has trusted in me so far. Without you, I wouldn’t be where I am today!

I want to dedicate this post mainly to everything I’ve learned thus far. Working with each individual client is so great, and really gives me a unique perspective and takeaway from each shoot. They’ve all taught me something a little different, but here are some of the biggest takeaways thus far:

  1. Confidence is key - This is a HUGE takeaway for me and I think everyone can apply it to their lives too! When I started my first few shoots, I was so scared of failing. I had these expectations of what a photographer was in my mind and what the finished product should look like. I was comparing myself to what I thought I was supposed to do. And naturally, when you’re overthinking every detail (for those who know me, this is laughable), you lose track of your confidence. The first few shoots I did, I literally had no confidence that I would succeed. But it’s all about changing your perspective. My whole life, I’ve been afraid to fail, and thus, overthink all the time. But instead, take a leap of faith and understand that at times, you will fail. That’s part of life. My new mindset heading into shoots is if I am confident in my abilities, there’s no way I’ll fail. Believe in yourself! As cheesy as that sounds…
  2. Take your time - I think it’s just natural in society these days, but we are always rushing. We rush to wake up and get ready. We rush to get to work. We rush to be finished work. We rush to get home. And before we know it, it’s tomorrow. Life is short, and we should enjoy every minute instead of rushing all the time. This applies to where I started with my shoots as well. I had this mindset that the photo shoots should be as quick as possible and to just shoot away to come across as “quick.” But it’s not always about limiting yourself to a time. And for that, I don’t charge by the hour or minute. Some shoots will naturally take me less time than others, but that’s ok. In order to ensure I’m capturing the best moments possible, it’s about taking my time and not always living minute-to-minute. And I ask that my clients take this approach too. When you show up for your shoot, don’t watch the clock. Take your time with the shoot and enjoy it! How often do you have pictures done? It’s a special time no matter what the occasion, so sit back and relax!
  3. Positivity - This one has probably been the biggest learning yet, and I’m trying everyday to apply it more and more in my life as well. There was a time when I would focus so heavily on negativity. And it’s so easy to do it. But instead of always complaining or thinking something could be better, remember all that is so good in life. A few of my shoots have really reminded me this, and for different reasons. Some of my shoots have more positive feedback than others (and I am always open to all feedback - that’s how we grow!). And I’m going to be completely honest - not all feedback has been what I expected to hear. For a couple days, I was focused so heavily on some of the negative voices. It was as if they were louder than the positive ones. But I reminded myself that this is how we grow! While it’s easier said than done, I try to remind myself of all the great things that are happening before I think about the more stressful things. Again, it’s about your mindset. So I challenge you to try and always think of a positive whenever you feel like complaining or thinking about the negativity around us - and watch how quickly your mood can change!
  4. Be unique! - I cannot stress this one enough! In the world of Pinterest and social media, it’s so easy to want to copy those around you. When I first started, I would look at Pinterest before every shoot. I wanted to see what the latest trendy poses were to make sure I included them as well. But to be honest, just because someone else (or lots of people) are doing something, doesn’t mean you have to as well. As a photographer, I want to be remembered for what I did differently rather than conforming to the latest trend. I’ve stopped surrounding myself with Pinterest and the latest poses and try to approach each shoot in the moment. In a time when it’s so easy to be like everyone else, be yourself and be unique!!
  5. Find your passion - I saved the best for last :) At times, I think we all feel like a car on a train track not able to change lanes. As if once we choose one path in life, we can’t choose another. Nearly 10 years ago, I made the choice to “leave” photography and head to the world of math. And for the past few years, I felt like I made my choice back then, and changing it wasn’t an option. I have always done photography as a hobby (but casual at best), and just told myself it could never become a career. But just because you chose one path at one point, doesn’t mean you can’t re-choose. Find your passion! What makes you excited about life? What do you love doing no matter what?? While photography is only my part-time career, it never gets tiring! Some weeks, I work 7 days with photoshoots on weekends, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. This is my passion! And when you’re doing what you love, it doesn’t feel like work. If you feel stuck, don’t feel like you can’t change. Life is short - we should all be doing what we love!

So there you have a list of some of the biggest takeaways from my photography venture thus far. I’m so blessed with the last few months and I can’t wait for all the things coming up (hello - weddings!!). With all that said, I have a few goals for the next few weeks and months:

  1. Build my social media followings - This has for sure been my weakest point thus far. I’m not going to lie, it seems like I’ve always been behind the rest of the world in social media. It took me so long to catch on to what Instagram was all about. With that said, my biggest goal for the next few months is to build a larger presence on Facebook and instagram. One of the best ways at doing this is through all of you! Please share my pages with friends, family, or anyone you know who may be interested in a photoshoot! I appreciate all the shares so much and cannot thank you enough! At the same time, you’ll start to see more posts popping up. I’m making it my mission to post more engaging things, so be on the lookout :)
  2. Post more blog entries - This kind of goes hand and hand with the above goal, but I want to start posting a larger variety to this blog. If there’s anything you might be interested in reading about, send me a message and I’ll add that to the list in the coming weeks! It can be anything from how to prepare for your photoshoot to how to take better pictures yourself! Let me know what you would love to read about!!
  3. Marketing - Social media is great to get the name out there, but I want to begin developing larger scale marketing materials to use for the future. And this is where you come in! I am looking for a couple models for the following categories for a FREE shoot! If you or someone you know may be interested in any of the following, send an email to with what type of shoot you’d be interested in! There’s a limited number of needed pictures, so first come, first serve!
    • Engagement/Couple Portrait
    • Family Portrait
    • Baby Portrait - sorry, only girls!
    • Maternity

Thank you all so much for reading! Be on the lookout for more to come :)

stephanie & austin engagement shoot Last week, I had the pleasure of working with Stephanie and Austin for their engagement shoot. The photoshoot was unique in that I simply shadowed a typical Saturday morning for the couple and their dog. Our day started at their favorite coffee shop and finished at the dog park they often frequent. It was a great time to meet the couple before their big day in September- can't wait for the wedding! Enjoy their pictures below :)

melissa & bryan maternity shoot Since starting my photography business, I've had the opportunity to work with many couples and I've been blessed to do so! Each has their own unique set of traits to bring to the photoshoot that help shape the pictures. And while I may be bias because I'm family, working with Melissa and Bryan last weekend was a dream! For those of you who don't know them, let me share their story:

For years, the couple has been trying to have a child. They had everything in place, all they needed was the baby. But after years of trying with no luck, they learned having a child the natural way wasn't in the cards for them. After months of trying different options, they still had no luck. This past summer, Melissa began IVF and all the scary things that come with it. Seeing her go through this personally was hard but knowing it could bring her a child kept the faith for us all. This past August, my husband and I got a call one night that had the happiest news: they were finally going to have the baby of their dreams! The last 8 months haven't been obstacle free, but amazingly through it all, she's always kept the faith! They are such an inspiration. Now, they're just a couple weeks away from meeting Baby W and I could not be happier for them!!

The photoshoot was one of my most unique yet and I loved it! Melissa and Bryan love all things farm so naturally, that was the perfect environment for their shoot. We began our day at their home, with the most beautiful view! The weather was perfect after weeks of cold. Everything fell into place perfectly.

Up next, we went to a farm that had special meaning to Bryan. We kept this spot simple; highlighting the silos that were part of that farm in the background.

Lastly, we stopped at a cow farm of a nearby friend. This part was so fun and definitely something I had never done before!

These pictures really brought me back to why I'm doing photography. Everyday is not easy and there are times that are more difficult than others, but as Melissa and Bryan showed me, you have to keep the faith. You have to stay positive and have your goals in mind. They are truly inspiring!

Enjoy the pictures everyone and thanks for reading :)

Apparently, sleeping is one of his favorite hobbies right now, but he couldn't help but stay awake throughout most of the shoot. He didn't want to miss any of the fun! Thanks again Jeff and Larisa for allowing me to be apart of this special time in your lives! Congratulations and I wish you many happy memories with the newest prince of the family!

the power of positivity Starting my own photography business has always been a dream of mine. It was something I had always been interested in, but would say I would do it "later in life" or "sometime in the future." At the time I didn't say it, or even acknowledge it, but I was scared.

In the art of photography, there is no right way of doing things. Everyone perceives pictures differently. What one person loves, another will hate. For those who know me, I have always been a numbers person. I studied math in college and have always been analytical by nature. In math, there is usually a right and wrong answer. There is one solution, and if you don't reach it, you're wrong. For me, this was my safe place; if I studied enough and approached the problem with the right process, I would get the right answer. But in photography, there is never a right answer. There is no right way to take a picture and there's no right style to use. And this is what held me back from chasing my dream.

Up until a couple weeks ago, I had let these negative thoughts consume my photography. I was ready to release my business online and on Facebook weeks ago, but something was holding me back. I didn't have the courage. Every time I considered publishing pictures, negative questions would run through my mind. What if someone hated the pictures? What if I wasn't good enough? What if people liked other photographers better? These were the questions holding me back. I was scared of the answers.

The day I published my page, I had two paths I could take. The first would be the negative route. I could have been scared of people's reactions and what they would say. I could have been afraid of failure. I could have cared more about the amount of likes I got on Facebook than I cared about pursuing something I was passionate about. And if I had taken this path, I wouldn't be writing this blog today. I would be doing what I've done for years - let my camera collect dust while I waited for the courage to come. But instead, I took the positive route. I changed my mindset. Instead of focusing on all the negativity that could come from being vulnerable, I focused on the positive things to come. With that, I answered the questions I feared most:

What if someone hates the pictures? This is bound to happen. Someone will always dislike a picture; it's inevitable. As humans, we have different styles and tastes, but that doesn't make it right and wrong. Just because someone doesn't like my style of photography doesn't mean everyone else will hate it. What's most important is that I am proud of my photography and my clients like the pictures. These are the only two things that really matter. The negative voices don't have to be the loudest.

What if I'm not good enough? There is no such thing in the arts as being good enough. You are only as good as you believe you are. As I said above, the only things that really matter at the end of the day are that I like my pictures and my clients do too. Naturally, we will always question if we're really good enough at something. There are always more classes we can take and more time we can spend practicing. But what truly helps a photographer grow is putting themselves out there and learning through experience. I'm not saying I will never fail, but until I do, I won't learn from it. I can always learn from more photography courses, but learning from doing will only make me stronger.

What if people like other photographers better? Just like the first question, this will happen. And it all ties back to style. Just because another photographer does things differently doesn't make them inherently better. They might do things differently, but that is what makes us unique. That is what defines our style. And it's ok if other people like another photographer's style better. It's so easy to get caught up in comparing myself to others. But as long as I'm true to my style, that's all I can do.

So after answering all these questions that had been looming over me for years, I finally had the courage to do what I hadn't before- publish my business. And I'm so glad I did! I'm so blessed with the reactions I've gotten from friends, family, and even strangers. My calendar is beginning to be filled with things I'm so excited and passionate about; I've even booked my first wedding! But none of this would be possible if I had taken the negative path of being afraid to fail. Through a positive outlook, I have begun to chase my dreams and I love this journey I'm on.

With all of that said, I couldn't have gotten to this point alone. Thank you to all of my "models" who helped me build my portfolio. Because you believed in me when I had no proof of success, I now have a foundation to my portfolio. I also want to thank all my friends and family who've provided support along the way. Without your support, guidance, and advice, I would surely not have made it this far. Lastly, I want to thank you for taking your time to read this blog and visit my page. To all those who have liked my Facebook page, shared with friends, and passed on a recommendation, I am so grateful! I still have so much to learn, but I'm also so proud of what I've already accomplished!

Lastly, I hope you can take away from this post a feeling of positivity. It's so easy to get caught up in the negative things around us. We can't turn on the TV without hearing about something wrong in the world. But instead of focusing all your energy on what isn't going right, focus on the great things around us. There will always be something to complain about, but that won't open any doors of opportunity. Find something in your life to be grateful for and positive about, and see what doors open up!

Thank you again for taking time to read this and for your positivity along the way! And stay tuned - the best is yet to come :) -Ashley
